Show and Tell, Part 2

These next photos were taken during a day trip to Porlamar, the big city on the island. (Holy awesome, when I just did a Google search of Porlamar, I found a bunch of recent reports of pirates boarding ships! Here's one example.)

The first time we were brought to 'the city,' the tour van dropped us off at this stupid shopping mall. Apparently a dumb upscale mall is the cultural limit of what most tourists want to experience. We were very disappointed to fly thousands of miles to South America, only to spend 3 hours at the local mall. So the next day we took a bus to the actual city, then took a taxi to the flea market. This was our pimp ride.

These wee ones put on a dance show while I took pictures, then squealed with delight when I showed them the pix on the camera. They didn't understand why they couldn't take a digital picture home in their hands.

Oops, how did this one get in here...

You know how they say you should be careful what you eat in South and Central America, lest you spend an inordinate amount of time in el bano? Yeah, well there was a sandwich stand that had Immodium written all over it (not really) but which sent out little cartoon aroma tendrils under my nose, tempting and teasing me.

"Is this really a good idea?"
"Yes."

The First Base sandwich (I thought the Grand Slam would wreak too much intestinal havoc) comes complete with a hamburger patty, salsa, broken potato chips, ham, cheese and a fried egg.

Pride before a fall.

3-2-1, contact. One of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten. Nicole ate half, saying she "didn't want me to be sick alone." Truth is, she had sandwich envy.

Later, when we were fighting for pole position in the bathroom, neither of us had the presence of mind to take photos. This is a stock photo from the archives, taken in Brooklyn.
