cool hands

No more dental talk eh? Don't worry, be happy.

So I've had a couple new entries in my favorite game- "which celebrity is Jesse."

Last night a girl named Danielle said Joe Strummer from The Clash, which isn't quite right, but which I appreciate. Danielle had a bit of a head cold.

My former friend Desiree recently said Steve from Blues Clues. She's out of the will.

In other news, El Toro, who is moving in with her boyf, reserved a UHaul truck three days ago and will be picking it up half a mile from our house. I waited a day longer and will be picking up my UHaul in Far Rockaway.

When I first moved here my co-worker Henry, a lifelong NYC resident, told me Far Rockaway was the most dangerous neighborhood in the city. This city has a lot of neighborhoods; to be the worst, it must be pretty bad.

An architect I met last night will be joining me on my trip to Far Rockaway with a video camera to chronicle the perilous journey. I'm not convinced he'll still have his camera by the end of the trip. Stay tuned.

I'm no native, but that seems deeply unlikely.

Though I will say different neighborhoods are apparently more dangerous depending on your background.

My friend Kilolo, who was born and raised in Brooklyn and who is black, told me it was too dangerous for black people to go to Canersie, so maybe Far Rockaway is like that?

OH! It's funny, I'm actually going to Canarsie/Rockaway Parkway, which I thought was Far Rockaway, but is not. So there you go.

Just out of curiosity, why does it seem "deeply unlikely" to you?

Oh, I just didn't think Far Rockaway would be the most dangerous neighborhoods. People always say it's like East NY or Bed Stuy, I figured you'd hear about Far Rockaway if it were bad.

i actually went to far rockaway this summer to visit friends...it was neither dangerous or scary. in fact, the part they lived in seemed almost quaint.
where was this guy you spoke with raised? probably the mean streets of stamford connecticut.

Everyone's a critic. Listen, did you read the article I linked to here? That's one crime rate indicator. Another thing is, my friend Danny teaches at Far Rockaway High School and he said there were several murders on school property this year.

So maybe it's not the worst, but I think we can agree that Far Rockaway has some problems.

That said, I made a mistake. I'm picking up the van in Canarsie, not Far Rockaway. Anyone care to talk about Canarsie?

According to Kilolo black people are afraid to go to Carnasie.

From wikipedia.internet:
During the 1990's, increasing crime and lower quality of life drove many of Canarsie's white population to move to Staten Island, Queens, and Long Island. This phenomenon was called 'white flight' by many. Today, Canarsie's population is mostly Black with many West Indians and African-American.

Well she grew up in the 80s and 90s, so that makes some sense.
