Bored of the Flies

Okay it's one thing when you've got cute little maggots squirming around the bottom of your trash can. Mother Nature has a knack for making her littlest creatures adorable so that you really want to take care of them.
The thing is, maggots grow up and become flies and flies are a big responsibility. Maybe if someone had told me that, I wouldn't have taken so many on as pets.
When Nicole and I returned from our weekend on the boat this evening, there were literally hundreds of flies on the windows in the kitchen, my room and Ben's room.
"Mom, hundreds of flies followed me home. Can I keep them?"
"No Jesse you're going to have to live without."
As soon as went in my room, they all started buzzing around in the air, kinda like a scene from The Birds. I tried to kill some of them with a rolled up Cabela's catalog but it left big bloody streaks on the windows. Nicole described the scene as positively biblical.

On a related note, I wonder if Ben will be thankful that I went killing crazy in his room with a newly-purchased flywswatter. Maybe he'll just be creeped out to see all the dead fly carcasses on his bed.

this happened to me once after i came back from vacation. it was horrifying. the sound of hundreds of flies buzzing in a room really tapped into a dark scary corner of my psyche. it took at week of chasing flies around the apartment with whatever rolled-up periodical i could find before they were mostly dead and i could sleep soundly again.

It is kind of liberating to get primal, though, dontcha think?
