An update on the sidewalk trash situation- I decided not to wade through fried rice without putting up a fight, so I called 311, the phone number of New York City itself. I told New York City about my serious problem and they said they would send someone out to assess the situation. At presstime, the mattress and rice remained in place, I took an alternate route to the subway. I will keep you posted on all developments as they happen.

I actually read about your situation in The Times. And Frank Rich is going to do a column about it for Sunday. BTW, the photo below looks a lot like my bedroom. Filth and squalor is allowed in the Midwest, but only indoors.
